Last week, the new airline Riyadh Air unveiled its complete livery, featuring a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, of which it is expecting 39 on firm order with 33 options.

The heir to the RIA project presented in June 2022, the new Saudi national airline presented on 12 March will be based at Riyadh-King Khalid airport, with operations due to begin in early 2025 - with the ambition of offering more than 100 destinations worldwide by 2030. The IATA code RX can already be seen on the vertical tail fin, painted pale blue, while the fuselage is painted lavender/purple, with the name Riyadh Air in large letters - in English and Arabic. This is "one of two liveries" that will be used, Riyadh Air said.

According to the airline, the look is "a perfect blend of cutting-edge technology and timeless elegance". The primary colour schemes used are lavender and blue; lavender, native to Saudi Arabia, "symbolises hospitality and the government uses lavender for ceremonial and official purposes".

Unveiled in a Charleston hangar, the livery is being applied to a 787-9 registered N8572C (a Boeing temporary registration), which is believed to be its first. No details have been leaked about its future configuration, but the aircraft is expected to make its debut at the Paris Air Show. Rumours about Riyadh Air's orders also point to around forty Airbus A350s, and above all up to 150 Boeing 737 MAXs (out of a total of at least 400 single-aisle aircraft in demand).

Another young subsidiary of its owner PIF (the Saudi sovereign wealth fund), the new leasing company Avilease, has just bought 13 aircraft from Avolon, including seven A320neo, two A330neo and a 737 MAX. Its chairman Fahad Al-Saif said in a statement: "AviLease began its journey last year with ambitious aspirations to be a leading institution in the aircraft leasing value chain, establishing a diversified fleet of modern aircraft manufactured by leading global companies. The agreement with the global leasing company, Avolon, is a true testament to our strength and unwavering purpose, and will provide us with new opportunities for direct expansion."
